Alchemy Properties, LLCMore About 123 Main Street Flemington, NJ

About the building

Although it was built as a modest two-story house in the late 1700s, 123 Main Street acquired its current three-story form and Italianate detailing in 1858, when it became the home of Nevius Brothers' Dry Goods store and J.P. Bodine & Sons Hardware & Furniture. These businesses and their successors thrived at this highly visible location for over a century. Beginning in the 1960s, new development along Routes 31 and 202 lessened downtown Flemington's viability as a retail center. The building gradually succumbed to neglect in the decades that followed.

The principals of Alchemy Properties, LLC acquired 123 Main Street in October 2002 and soon embarked on a comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation program. Alchemy upgraded the buildings structural, mechanical, electrical and the fire safety systems to modern standards; reconfigured the interior spaces for improved efficiency; and meticulously restored its original exterior details. The top two floors contain six luxury apartments and the first floor houses commercial space. The restoration was completed in May 2006. The building was award the prestigious Hunterdon County Planning Board's 2007 Planning & Design Award.

The finished project will be a symbol of downtown Flemington's resurgence as the residential and commercial center of Hunterdon County.
